What can we do to reduce the damage that earthquakes do?

Pakistan Quake

Powerful Quake Hits Pakistan,   About 400 Pakistani school children dead in quake,
Earthquake Kills 1,700 in 3 Asia Nations,   Quake shakes subcontinent; thousands feared killed,
Earthquake Kills at Least 132 in India,   Big quake rocks Indian subcontinent,
Major World Earthquakes in Past 50 Years

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Pakistan and Kashmir at 0350 GMT on Saturday. More than 1,700 were killed, but the death toll is likely to be much higher - perhaps 30,000. Around 400 children were killed when their schools collapsed. Two apartment blocks collapsed in Islamabad. Aftershocks of up to magnitude 6.3 continued for hour afterwards. Landslides and heavy rain cut off land-based communication and mobile phone networks were overwhelmed. Winter is already drawing in the area.

Energy Dept. May Miss Hanford Deadline

The U.S. Energy Department is likely to miss a 2011 deadline to open a nuclear waste treatment plant at Hanford, Washington. Seismic concerns have increased the cost and caused the delay, and a revised plan will not be ready until June.

Nations to Work Together to Limit Flu Risk

Delegations from about 80 countries met at the State Department to discuss prevention and containment of the bird flu virus. Meanwhile President Bush talked with drug company executives to find out what they wanted to speed up production of a vaccine.

Could Flu Quarantines Bar Travel?

The Bush administration plans to impose a quarantine and restrict travel if a bird flu pandemic reaches the USA. Its plans are not clear about who would take charge or how hospitals would cope, however, and quarantine on its own would be unlikely to do more than delay the spread of the disease by a few weeks.

Three Ducks Dead in Romania; Bird Flu Eyed

Authorities are awaiting tests on 3 ducks that died of bird flu to see if they had the H5N1 strain. If so, they would be the first cases in Europe.

Study: Wyo. Gas Projects Harming Mule Deer

A study shows that mule deer at a natural gas development in western Wyoming avoid well pads, and are forced into a less suitable winter range. Their population dropped 46% between 2002 and 2005.

Global Warming May Kill Animals

Global warming could prove fatal to a variety of animal species. Whilst some can move, others, like polar bears, have nowhere left to go. Others are sensitive to temperature; for example the gender of marine turtle hatchlings depends on temperature. Global warming is happening too fast this time for some animals to evolve, and we may be blocking the way of others to move - they need a "biological corridor".

Hatchery Released Disease-Infected Trout

A private fish hatchery has been convicted of releasing trout infected with whirling disease into at least 72 locations in rivers in New Mexico, Utah and Colorado between 1997 and 2003. The disease is passed on by spores from a parasite, so there is nothing that can be done once fish are released into the wild. The owner was ordered to pay $30,000.

House Passes Bill to Boost Refineries

By extending the vote by 40 minutes, the Republican majority managed to get passed legislation encouraging the construction of new oil refineries passed in the House by 212-210 (HR 3893). President Bush said, "I commend the House for passing legislation that would increase our refining capacity and help address the cost of gasoline, diesel fuels and jet fuels." Democrats said the legislation was a sop to oil companies and that it would eliminate many blends now designed to reduce air pollution.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita stories

Surveyors Map Katrina's Storm Surge

Hurricanes push storm surges in front of them. How high they are depends not only on the wind strength and air pressure, but also the size of a storm's eye, how far the hurricane force winds extend from the centre, the speed at which it comes ashore, the shallowness of the water off the coast, and the angle at which it hits. Surveyors are mapping the storm surge from Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast. Whilst less powerful than the category 5 Hurricane Camille, Katrina was much larger with an unusually large eye. Katrina's storm surge may have been up to 35 feet at its highest.

Dems Seek Penalties for Gas Price-Gougers

In the Democrats' weekly radio address Saturday Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut said that price gougers should face tough criminal penalties. Concerned that people would not be able to heat their homes this winter and in the future and by America's dependence on foreign oil, she called for tax credits for hybrid vehicles, higher vehicle efficiency standards and investment in alternative fuel technologies.

La. Senators Fight Over Aid for Katrina

Louisiana senators Democrat Mary Landrieu and Republican David Vitter differ as to the best way of meeting the state's immediate needs such as paying essential workers. Vitter wanted a $1m loan for essential services out of hurricane relief funds, and to prohibit the federal government from forgiving the loans. Landrieu wanted $15 billion without that provision.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin plans to allow casino-type gambling in New Orleans' largest hotels as way of economic recovery.
